about us
CLS Custom Upholsterers & Design Center’s history is one many of us are familiar with, as both the Catalano family and the business have their roots in Brooklyn, followed by a migration east to Long Island during the post-war “Baby Boomer” era. Michael "Pop" Catalano, married and starting a family, began building and upholstering furniture. Over time, he worked for both decorators and furniture stores. In the 1960s, oldest son Sandy, just home from Vietnam, followed his own dream of entrepreneurship, and hitched it to his father’s business at the same time!
What Sandy realized was the value of finding their own customers and servicing them directly. Thus began what became the driving force behind the business and what still drives the business today – owners who deal with and speak directly to customers. Owners who are committed to quality, and quick, accurate expedition of services. By the early 1970s, the company was now located in Suffolk County. Two more of "Pop's" sons joined the business – Jim in the construction/shop end and Ray in the retail sales. More recent years have brought the third generation of Catalanos to CLS, Sandy’s sons Michael and Patrick. Both started in the business as teenagers some 20-plus years ago and are now sharing their experience and knowledge with 21st century families and homeowners.
Yes, CLS has been servicing customers across three generations … and across Long Island, New York City and beyond!
